Merger talks

Representatives of the Levenshulme League and the Manchester League have had initial meetings to

explore the possibility of a merger between the two leagues. After lengthy discussion, we found that there is much in common between the two leagues and that there are a number of benefits that would result from the joining together of the two leagues.

Common ground

o       The leagues currently operate over broadly the same geographical area, (South Manchester) so

little additional travel would be entailed

o       Both leagues play on the same night – Thursdays – and matches start at a similar time

o       Both leagues play off handicaps, and the highest and lowest marks used are comparable

o       Each league runs a variety of individual, pairs and three man competitions

o       Both leagues have ranking awards to measure success over the season

o       Teams in each league pay similar amounts in fees and receive similar prize monies

o       Almost all clubs in both leagues can play matches on two tables

o       The leagues already cooperate as joint promoters of the Greater Manchester Open, which was

launched last season

o       Both leagues are currently financially healthy

Differences

o       In some areas however there are significant differences between the leagues; if a decision in

principle is made to go ahead, representatives of each league would formulate proposals, and

alternatives, to be put to the players for a democratic decision

Benefits of a merger

o       Increased number of clubs involved – currently there are 44 teams involved between the two

leagues (Levenshulme 31 and Manchester 13)

o       Bigger pool of players involved – nearly 600 players are currently registered by the two leagues

o       Better level of competition – more good players involved

o       More competition between teams – with more divisions, greater potential for

promotion/relegation battles

o       Enable better promotion of the game throughout the South Manchester area

o       More attractive to other teams who might wish to join in future years

o       Greater potential to attract sponsorship, leading to more prize monies

o       Enhanced ability to get press coverage

o       Saving of administration costs

o       Most other large British cities have a unified league structure – only in Manchester are players
divided into so many small local leagues
